Sinfulness Is a Condition, Sin Is a Choice

One of the most important truths to understand about the human heart is this: sinfulness is a condition, but choosing to sin is a choice.
Sinfulness: The Condition We All Share
The Bible is clear that every person is born into sin. David confessed, “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5). Paul echoes this in Romans 5:12, teaching that sin entered the world through Adam, and through that one act, death spread to all humanity.
This means sinfulness is not just about what we do—it’s about who we are apart from God. We are born with a nature that is bent toward rebellion. Left to ourselves, we cannot escape this condition. It’s like a spiritual disease: we don’t just commit sins; we are sinners by nature.
Sin: The Choice We Make
Yet even though sinfulness is a condition, the individual acts of sin are choices. James 1:14–15 explains, “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin.”
When temptation comes, we are faced with a decision. We can either resist and look for the way of escape God promises (1 Corinthians 10:13), or we can give in and choose sin. Our condition explains why temptation is so powerful, but it doesn’t excuse our choices. Each sin is a willful act of disobedience.
Freedom and Forgiveness in Jesus
The good news is that while we cannot cure our sinful condition on our own, Jesus Christ came to do what we could not. On the cross, He bore the punishment for our sins and broke the power of sin over our lives.
Romans 6:23 puts it simply: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Through repentance and faith in Christ, we are forgiven for the choices we’ve made, and we are freed from the power of the sinful condition we inherited. The Holy Spirit gives us a new heart and new desires. We’re no longer slaves to sin—we’re set free to walk in obedience and joy.
Turning From Sin to Trust in Jesus
So how do we respond?
-
Acknowledge your condition. Admit that sinfulness isn’t just out there in the world—it lives inside of you.
-
Confess your choices. Bring your sins before God honestly, knowing that He already sees them.
-
Trust in Christ. Believe that His death and resurrection are enough to forgive your past and give you a new future.
-
Walk in freedom. With the help of the Holy Spirit, begin living a new life, not under the weight of sin but in the joy of grace.
Sinfulness is the condition. Sin is the choice. Jesus is the cure.
